From the balcony, Rose surveyed the room. Men with silk shirts unbuttoned halfway down their gold medallion covered chests, undulated next to beautiful women in short dresses that revealed extraordinary amounts of cleavage. Multi-colored lights reflected off of a large, rotating many-faceted mirrored ball, suspended from the ceiling.
Bobbing her head to the rhythmic beat of the loud music, she turned to her older companion.
“So this was disco, huh?”
The Doctor winced. “Yeah, not humanities finest hour, but it was fun while it lasted.”
“And you’re sure the power crystals are here?” Rose asked.
“The TARDIS indicated they were,” The Doctor replied, pulling out a short, cylindrical device. He pressed a button and it whirred, almost in time with the music.
He pointed. “There.”
Rose looked and saw the three glowing star-shaped orbs. They’d been set into light fixtures in the ceiling.
“But they’re glowing. Does that mean they’re…”
“Activated yes. Which explains the temporal stasis field they’ve generated around this club.”
“So then this disco will just keep playing music and people will dance forever?” Rose asked.
“That’s right,” replied The Doctor.
“Couldn’t we just… you know… leave them?” she asked, gyrating her hips.
The Doctor leaned in close.
“You’ve heard of the Big Bang, right?”
“Sure,” she replied.
“The last time all the crystals were activated, that’s what happened,” he said
Rose stopped dancing. “Right then. Let’s go.”
[This is my entry into the Sunday Photo Fiction challenge, hosted by Alastair Forbes. Write a short story of 200 words or less from the photo prompt provided. I went a bit over the word limit and the story doesn’t really have much of an ending so I apologize for that. I don’t write much fan fiction (barely any at all) so this was my attempt at practicing for a project I’m working on. I hope you’ll all indulge me as I work out the bugs. And yes, the title is an homage to the wonderful Douglas Adams.]

Very cleverly done. What piece are you working on? Fanfiction? It is very well done anyway!

A bit of a collaboration which has turned into a bit of fan fiction for a while. Thanks for the boost of confidence, Angie.

I caught the title homage right away — fun piece!

LOL! I would get the hell out of there too! However, if there is a Big Bang, then it doesn’t really matter where they are. Haha! Nice story!

This is pretty good. Are you going to expand it?

Possibly, but I’m not sure where. I’m working on something that involves Dr. Who and I wanted some practice trying to get the voice right. Thank you for the compliment.

Dr Who fiction with a Hitchhiker-like title. Very nice!

LOL… yeah, the fanboy in me came out.

Awesome fan fiction and I like this temporal stasis the dancing people are stuck in. It’s interesting, hopefully they get the orbs before another Big Bang of some sort occurs. Creative and well written.

Thanks Amanda. Fan fiction makes me nervous because fans are so unforgiving. Plus, there are many out there that are really good at it and I’m just not, but thanks. I’m glad you liked it. 🙂

A Douglas Adams homage and a Doctor Who story! It’s like “City of Death” all over again. 😉 Great story! Out of curiosity, is it supposed to be 9 or 10? I’m assuming it’s one of those two because of Rose.

It’s 10. No disrespect to Christopher Eccleston, but Tennant will always be my favorite.

That’s what I thought. Just wanted to make sure.

Woohoo! I see the Fanfiction bug has spread. Was starting to feel lonely as the only person writing fanfiction for these photo prompts lol. I like the little snippet you provided, but I couldn’t figure out if it was 9 or 10. I was leaning towards 9 until I read a previous comment that you meant it to be 10. To me, I always saw 9 as more subdued, less expressive, but very sassy. I saw 10 as a little more enthusiastic, a little ‘younger’, and more reckless.
Confusion of the Doctor aside, this was a very well-written attempt at Fanfiction! 😀
P.S. I see Tennant’s your favorite. We shall have to disagree here since Eccleston is mine ^_^

Thanks Jade. As you know by now, fan fic is not my forte. I felt a bit uncomfortable trying this but I wanted to give it a shot. I guess you’ll have to mentor me in this area. 🙂
I like Eccleston and he might be tied for second place with Smith (although I’m an old school Whovian and Tom Baker is right up there on the list.) But Tennant will always be my favorite. He had a charm about his and a certain amount of recklessness that I thought was perfect for the character. I’m not sure if I captured that in this story.
In any case, thank you for the compliment. 🙂

Clever idea. But if he’s leaving wouldn’t it be “So long and thanks for all the fish.” 😉

Another Adams fan. I appreciate that. 🙂

I have a leather bound version of the first three “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” books together. Mir even has that red ribbon like a bible to mark the page! I haven’t read them in years. Definitely lessons in taking life to seriously. Arthur Dent truly the greatest character ever.

Wow! I’m officially jealous now. That’s awesome! His books were like nothing I’d ever read before (or since) and his work has definitely influenced mine. Nice to meet another fan. (And if you’re ever looking to part with those books… keep me in mind. 😉

I will keep my “precious”. I think they published them once in the mid eighties. I have never seen another one. Of course, is kept safely buried in a basement. But if I get delusional, I’ll let you know. 😎

I like this. I smiled when I saw the title. Got it straight away.
You can see them there, althogh I saw it as Capaldi’s Doctor rather than Tennant’s or Eccles Cakes.
Great story, and it doesn’t need an ending. It’s a Doctor Who story 😉

I still haven’t warmed to Capaldi yet, but I keep hoping. It took me a while before I accepted Smith, but he eventually won me over. It’s a hard role to take up.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked it.

I didn’t like the idea of Capaldi at first. My reaction was “but he’s old”. Then it sunk in and my throught was “yes! he’s old!” No more companions falling in love with him. No more pretty boy. Now he gets respect from people, but he is a darker doctor. I like him. Now.

LOL… you make a good argument for him. I’ll keep that in mind and perhaps I’ll see him differently now. Thanks for that perspective.

🙂 I was reading some of the other comments. Tom Baker will always be my favourite as he is the one I grew up with.
Tennant’s relationship with Rose was brilliant. Of all the incarnations, he was the most “human”. When she was sucked into a different dimension, and when they were standing either side of a wall, that scene brings tears to my eyes even now. And then Bad Wolf Bay – that got me right in the feels.

I understand where you’re coming from. I grew up with Tom Baker and in some ways, he’s the most iconic Doctor of all. The chemistry between the tenth doctor and Rose was special, although I have to admit that the eleventh and Amy Pond was also strong. Such excellent writing when they brought the show back. Now I want to go watch some Dr. Who!

He was the longest running doctor. I want to watch some more again. I agree, the link between Amy and Smith’s doctor was excellent, and the twists were amazing.

It sounds like another big bang is on its way. I suppose they’ll be safe in the Tardis. It seems to be indestructible. Well done, Chris. 🙂 — Suzanne
